Our Services

Our physiotherapists are trained and certified with the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) and we are comprehensively equipped to provide scoliosis management and able to assess and guide the client at any stage of the scoliosis journey.  We follow the Guidelines produced by the International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT).

At Brisbane Scoliosis Clinic, we have also developed our own unique 3D-Plus program to better centre your treatment progression.  Putting you back in control of your growing spine.

Our unique "3D-Plus" Program

3D-Plus at Brisbane Scoliosis Clinic
We have developed our own unique "3D-Plus" program at our clinic and apply this to all clinical management of all our patients.  The program is to pay particular focus on the whole person's recovery (3D, and not just the spine's lateral deviation, 2D) and manage progression within a carefully planned timeframe to achieve maximal results practically and effectively.  We have learnt from our years of experience treating spinal disorders that the patient is often left wondering how far along they are on the recovery pathway.  Using the 3D-Plus program we have developed, our patients are clear with the objective goals and understand the time and the effort required to achieve them.
Before we can accept any patient into our treatment program, they must first attend a comprehensive Initial Scoliosis Assessment Appointment with one of our Specialist Consultants at our Upper Mount Gravatt Clinic.  Please contact us to make an appointment.

The Initial Scoliosis Assessment
60 minutes

Picture
For the most accurate assessment, we ideally need to clearly see your whole torso, so clients will be asked to remove their clothing.  It is important for the female client to wear appropriate under garment that allows clear visibility of the back.  T-back bras are not recommended as they obstruct viewing of the mid and upper spine.  Common bra or crop top with narrow back straps are best.

The assessment is a thorough 60 minutes session and includes:
Your consultant will start by going through your medical history as it pertains to your spinal condition.  They will also ask about the symptoms you currently experience (such as back pain or compromised breathing) and any treatments you have previously undergone for your back problems.

Next, your consultant will conduct a physical examination and evaluation of your spine and back. This will include taking the following measurements :
  • Photographic review (includes photos in standing of front, sides and back view) which allows us to assess the rotation (for scoliosis patients) or kyphosis/forward bend (for hyperkyphosis/posture patients) of your spine
  • Determine structural or functional curve type (including Rigo curve classification)
  • X-Ray review (measurement of scoliosis angles rotations, and translations,).  It is essential that the patient presents at our Centre with a current set of EOS FULL SPINE x-rays.  X-rays need to have been taken in weight bearing position, showing a posterior-Anterior (PA) view of the full spine, and a Lateral view (Sagittal) view.  We are going to measure the radiological characteristics of the scoliosis curve pattern, any associated spinal degeneration, and the degree of curvature using the Cobb angle method
  • Neurological assessment (reflex testing) and assessment of asymmetry in shoulder and hip
  • Measurement of spinal torsion using a scoliometer

At the end of your appointment, the next steps will be outlined:
  • Explain what your clinical diagnosis means
  • Proposed treatment (including expected outcomes)
  • Treatment timeline going forward

Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise
60 minutes session
45 minutes session

A program of Rigo Method scoliosis exercise therapy is customised for patients based on their major idiopathic curvature, immediately following their Initial Scoliosis Assessment, and before they begin the first therapy session.

In the session, physiotherapy scoliosis-specific exercise requires a 3D-Plus approach to address the curve from all angles and directions.  Hence, the exercises need to be tailored to the unique condition of the patient's spine.  Exercises can be performed whilst sitting, laying down or standing up, with several props being used to assist such as gym balls and wall bars.  The therapist utilises a variety of cues and techniques to improve shape and then develop the endurance ability to maintain it in both static postures and dynamic postures.  We also address any imbalances in muscle lengths or weaknesses found around the hips and shoulder region.

Audio recordings are taken and included in the Rigo Method scoliosis home exercise program.  You are expected to practise and replicate the entire exercise program before we see you at the next session.

At Brisbane Scoliosis Clinic we offer "SpineCor treatment",  which is the leading dynamic bracing solution for managing scoliosis and hyperkyphosis in children and adults. Centred around the use of a customised spinal brace, with exercises when required.

SpineCor treatment keeps the body moving whilst intelligently managing the spinal position in a curved spine.  Design Features Delivers effective scoliosis control whilst preserving near normal movement. Provides postural correction, pain relief, and prevention of progression for adults. Enables the child’s body to develop naturally as they grow.

The SpineCor Braces are customised to the needs of each patient.  SpineCor Treatment can successfully treat many different curve types… from small curves to larger and multiple curves.  Regular reviews throughout the treatment process allow for adjustments to be made to the brace, helping to achieve the best results for you. Unlike some other treatments, SpineCor treatment maintains the stability of the curve and muscle strength. This leads to better long-term results.

To achieve the best outcome, we would recommend to complete the entire procedure, including Assessment, Measurement, Fitting and Review to tailor a customer-made orthotic brace to you.  The estimated timeframe is as the following photo.

The SpineCor Brace consists of the pelvic base with 3 pieces of thermos-formable plastic stabilised by 2 thigh bands and 2 crotch bands, a bolero made of cotton, and 4 corrective elastic bands.   The lower part of the brace acts as an anchor for the upper corrective part of the brace, whose bands wrap around the body to control the position of the spine. The corrective bands push, pull or twist the trunk in order to off-load or improve the position of the spine.

The brace is easy to put on and take off. Worn comfortably under clothing, it is fully flexible, allowing you to carry on with your daily life, including sporting activities. Its discreet nature means the brace in undetectable under normal clothing, making it more appealing to patients, helping to achieve better results.
